Questions & answers

Frequently asked

Everything about journaling for your wellbeing, how Journaly works, and keeping your reflections private.

What is Journaly?
Journaly is an AI journaling app with a companion you can actually talk to. It brings guided journaling, a mood map, a planner, goals, gratitude, calming guided exercises, a dream journal and letters to your future self together in one warm, private space.
Is journaling good for your mental health?
Yes. Decades of research on expressive writing link regular journaling to lower anxiety, reduced stress and improved wellbeing. Naming what you feel calms the brain's stress response and helps you notice patterns you can act on.
Why keep a journal?
Journaling is one of the simplest ways to track your growth and check in with yourself. Over weeks it turns scattered feelings into visible patterns, shows how far you have come, and gives you a steady, honest place to return to. Many people find it lowers stress and helps them understand themselves better.
What can I journal about?
Anything on your mind. People use Journaly to calm anxiety, unpack a hard day, capture dreams, practise gratitude, work through shadow-work prompts, set goals, brainstorm creative ideas, or simply check in with how they are doing. There is no right way to journal, and the companion meets you wherever you are.
How do I start journaling if I never know what to write?
Start with one honest line, not a blank page. A prompt like “right now, I feel…” is enough, and Journaly's companion opens with a gentle question so you always have somewhere to begin. One sentence a day is a real, complete practice.
Can journaling help with anxiety?
For many people, yes. Writing down racing thoughts breaks the loop of rumination and, research suggests, can lower anxiety within a couple of weeks of short daily sessions. Journaly's calming and reset exercises are built for exactly those moments.
What is shadow work journaling?
Shadow work is journaling that gently explores the parts of yourself you usually look away from, based on the ideas of psychologist Carl Jung. Done with care it builds self-understanding, and Journaly guides it with prompts and a companion that keeps it safe and steady.
What is a mood map?
A mood map places how you feel on two gentle axes, energy and tone, instead of a single one-to-ten score. It captures the difference between, say, anxious and low, and reveals your emotional patterns over time.
How often should I journal?
As often as suits you, but little and often beats long and rare. A minute most days builds the habit far better than a page once a fortnight, and Journaly keeps entries short and pressure-free so it sticks.
What is an AI journaling companion, and how is it different from ChatGPT?
An AI journaling companion is built for reflection rather than answers. Unlike a general chatbot that forgets you between chats, Journaly's companion remembers your entries and goals, follows up gently, and helps you understand yourself over time.
How does Journaly use my entries?
Your companion remembers what you have written so it can gently reflect it back, notice patterns and pick up where you left off, rather than asking you to explain yourself again. It is there to give continuity and understanding, and everything you write stays private to you.
What can I use Journaly for?
Everyday reflection, calming anxiety with guided exercises, gratitude, dream journaling, shadow work, planning your day, setting goals with an accountable companion, creative morning pages, and sealed letters to your future self, all in one app.
Is journaling really backed by science?
The core of it is. Expressive writing is one of the most studied self-help practices, with research linking it to lower anxiety, better mood and even physical-health benefits. Journaly simply makes that practice easier to keep.
Is Journaly free?
Yes. Journaly free gives you unlimited journaling, Daily Reset and gratitude, a few guided exercises each week, and a preview of Insights and About You — enough to build a real practice without paying. Premium removes the limits, with unlimited exercises, full insights and all companions, on the Quarterly or Yearly plan.
Should I choose Free, Quarterly, or Yearly?
Start with Free — it’s genuinely useful on its own: unlimited journaling, Daily Reset, gratitude and a taste of everything else. When you want the full experience, Quarterly (3 months) is the gentlest way in — long enough to build a real habit without a big upfront commitment. Choose Yearly once journaling is part of your routine: it’s the same Premium at half the price of paying quarterly. There’s no wrong choice, and you can upgrade whenever you like.
Can I save my entries?
Yes. Every entry is saved securely and kept for you, so your journal builds into a lasting record you can look back on any time.
Can I export or share my journal?
Yes. You can export your entries to keep your own copy or share them on your terms. By default your journal is private, so nothing leaves the app unless you choose to share it.
Can I delete my account?
Yes, you are always in control. You can delete individual entries, or permanently delete your account and everything in it, whenever you want.
Is my journal private?
Privacy is a core design goal. Your reflections are yours, and keeping them safe and private is central to how Journaly is built.
